Mosaic Health Care

The Mosaic Healthcare Team is an extension of Mosaic L.A. that expresses itself through activities of serving. Mosaic has been making service trips to Mexico for many years. In 1999, Sue Yamamoto, RN and Matt Shriver, RN began a healthcare ministry particularly to serve the preschool department with weekly assessments of the children. Little did they know that this healthcare team would become a magnet of enthusiasm and service as it is today.

In 1999, Mosaic had a handful of doctors in the congregation. A service trip to Ensenada, Mexico was scheduled for September of that year and the healthcare team wanted to use their resources and abilities but were not sure how. A physician who had been coming to Mosaic, John Rodarte, was interested in coming on the trip and made the suggestion of putting on a medical clinic. The rest of the team thought that was a good idea. But, with no budget they were not sure how they could do so.

The team began to pray. They prayed over everything! They prayed that God would build a team and he did. They prayed that God would provide the medication and supplies and he did. They prayed that God would get the team and everything to the destination and he did. Many awesome experiences resulted from simply a few stepping out in faith to impact a needy community for the sake of the Gospel.

The healthcare team is not simply made up of health professionals; there are many other opportunities for everyone to get involved. When a medical clinic is put on, the focus in not on the physical but the spiritual. Therefore, there is a huge need for counselors and translators, children’s workers, administrative assistance, computer support, as well as physicians, nursing personel, dental professionals, physical and occupational therapy, and students of all kinds.

Local Opportunities

Mosaic is one of over sixty partnering churches that QueensCare has. QueensCare is a non-profit organization that was created out of the sale of a local hospital several years ago. QueensCare (www.queenscare.org) wants to address the healthcare disparities in Los Angeles and has numerous departments to accomplish their goals.

One such department is their Health and Faith Partnership. This aspect of QueensCare is made up of Parish Nurses and Health Promoters that position themselves in one of the sixty churches one day out of the week. Please refer to their website above for more information about QueensCare.

Mosaic has partnered with QueensCare since June, 2000. With the formation of a health cabinet at Mosaic comprised of people from diverse health backgrounds, they are promoting health, relieving human suffering, and sharing the love of Christ in a new and exciting way.

Please refer to our calendar of events for upcoming local opportunities to serve with Mosaic or to invite people you may know that could make use of these services.

Ensenada

Over the last six years, Mosaic has been sending teams to Ensenada, Mexico to serve in multiple capacities. Four years ago the healthcare team decided they wanted to be a part and got a wild idea: let’s do a medical clinic! Since that time Mosaic has sent approximately 1,090 people to serve approximately 3,050 through their medical and dental clinics. Approximately 150 of those counseled in their clinics decided to make a focused commitment of their lives to Jesus.

Other opportunities arose out of the interests the people had who signed up. Mosaic has expressed the love of God to the city through medical and dental care, counseling, children’s activities, a business team, teacher’s team, building projects, mural paintings, sports, drama, dance, music, and last but not least PICKING UP TRASH, YEAH BABY!!!

From that point in time until now, they have seen the Lord assemble formidable teams and many relationships to do His will by ministering to the people of Ensenada. The team is drawing doctors, nurses, counselors, children’s workers, organizations, etc. to put these clinics on.

Early on in the genesis of this ministry, a young doctor named Se Lee emphatically stated that he was going on the trip to support what the counselors were doing and would not want to be the central focus for the team’s purpose. They have been able to carry out his vision and have remained focused on making an eternal impact, not merely a temporary physical one.

The healthcare team uses Labor Day Weekend at the beginning of September and Ensenada Toy Drive in December to do their outreaches. This affords anyone and everyone the opportunity to be a part of the adventure. For less than the price of a meaningless weekend in Las Vegas, unless getting married, a person’s travel arrangements, lodging, and food are covered. If you would like to be added to Mosaic Healthcare Team’s email list for periodic updates, please contact Dr. Lisa Perez at mosaic.ensenada@mac.com

    I was wondering if there was a way to do comedy shows for patients. I’m not sure what the facility is like, but if that is something that is at all possible please let me know. And I was wondering about the clinic in LA, if I need to have insurance to go???? Thank you so much!

    Hi, I have been attending Mosiacs for the last few months and love it. I am interested in becoming connected with the healthcare team. I am studying occupational therapy and have a background in exercise/health and nutrition. Is there an opportunity for me to help?

    I applaud this effort. AS great as it is I still can’t help but wonder…

    Maybe we don’t see it, but what of those who need healthcare here? In this country, that can not afford it?

    With the closing of King Drew the resources at the remaining county hospitals which were already drawn thin are now even more anemic. Some people who do not even realize the seriousness of their illness may not even choose to go through the hassle and therefore hasten their own demise.

    We increasingly see missions as caring for those far away from us, but if we are failing at home, what exactly is a victory abroad?

    Isaiah 58
    4. “Behold, you fast for contention and strife and to strike with a wicked fist.
    You do not fast like you do today to make your voice heard on high.
    5. “Is it a fast like this which I choose, a day for a man to humble himself?
    Is it for bowing one’s head like a reed
    And for spreading out sackcloth and ashes as a bed?
    Will you call this a fast, even an acceptable day to the LORD ?
    6. “Is this not the fast which I choose,
    To loosen the bonds of wickedness,
    To undo the bands of the yoke,
    And to let the oppressed go free
    And break *every* yoke?
    7. “Is it not to divide your bread with the hungry
    And bring the homeless poor into the house;
    When you see the naked, to cover him;
    And not to hide yourself from your own flesh?
    8. “Then your light will break out like the dawn,
    And your recovery will speedily spring forth;
    And your righteousness will go before you;
    The glory of the LORD will be your rear guard.”

    WHile doing this in foreign places is great, can we start with our churches, our community and go out from there?

    That’s my two cents…
