Relationships are tough! 22 years later Jean and I are happily married and amazed that we have survived ourselves. We came to realize that it takes both spiritual and mental commitments to get through the tough times together. Sometimes it has seemed that the whole world was against us and there have been times when it seemed that we were our own worst enemies and wouldn't make it to the next day. But we held on. We somehow learned to trust God and each other in the midst of the confusion and pain that goes along with growing up and facing unresolved issues and fears. Remarkably, problems and conflict many times served to strengthen our character and faith.

Well, I'm obviously out of the demographic for "We Do," but I am impressed with what you have done together. I met you in the fall of 2003 and I knew there were rough spots. I admire you for the way you've not quit, not run away, not chosen to snipe at each other. I admire the way you've continued to work on your relationship with each other. Keeping going is the hard part. Congratulations, Deb and Nate. You have one of the few relationships that serves as an example of life to me, a flower amid the wreckage of our society. Hold God's hand and walk, creatively.

We were married the summer of 2003. On our honeymoon, we discovered something that would haunt our marriage to this day -- sexual and emotional abuse in her past. Smiles shown on our faces during those days, but at home we had a deep chasm between us. We felt alone…isolated…and hopeless. Not knowing how to handle my frustrations as a man, I sought other relationships on the internet. As her scars pushed me away. My actions pushed her away. We were taught divorce wasn’t an option. But it often felt like the only option. We sought help and began a long healing process. We still don’t have a normal marriage. In no way are we saying we are fixed, but we are better. In our small group, we miraculously met a married couple in a very similar situation. We began to share our story. We found support, community, and comfort. This spurred us to begin the WE DO ministry. Our hope is that through this ministry you not only meet other couples, but also find those who share a common experience. No couple can make it alone. Married couples in this community have survived adultery, the loss of a child, disease, etc. But we have also found abundant joy and blessings through each other. We hope you find that too through this ministry. If you need help, or have advice for couples whom are struggling, or simply want to share your praises, we hope you are comfortable posting it on this blog.
-Many blessings, Nate and Deb Novero.
