In a culture where influence is so easily accessed, we may imagine that power comes from a pursuit of influence. But, when Jesus stepped into human history just over 2,000 years ago, he flipped that story completely.

Based on the story starting in John chapter 11, Pastor Erwin unfolds the story of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead. Jesus displays His power in such an unprecedented way. In that moment, no one could have imaged what He would do next. Instead of entering the prominent city of Jerusalem by announcing his power and Messianic identity publicly, Jesus came in on a donkey-on the most humble form of transportation.

Jesus declared with his actions that He was a King who came to serve in humility. Jesus never used His power to manipulate others or increase His status. Jesus always used His power to lift others up. When thinking of the way Jesus served, we are confronted with this reality: do we really want a King who serves? Because, if Jesus served this way, this demands more from us as humanity. We are meant to put power and status aside to embrace the mission of Jesus at any cost. This is life with Jesus, and the most fulfilling life we could choose.

“Jesus was not who was expected, but He was exactly who we needed.” -Erwin McManus
