With so much going on we can feel overlooked. It’s important to remember that the power of faithfulness is in the day-to-day moments. The story of David is a great reminder, that we are all chosen by God, maybe just not right now in the way we want. You have been chosen by God to do a powerful thing, but you must be faithful with what you’ve been given now so that you can be trusted later. Out of 1 Samuel 17:17-19 Pastor Joe Smith tells us about the story of David. David was teaching us how faithfulness is an important aspect of who we become. He reminds us it’s not who you are when you get what you want, it’s who you are when you could be doing other things but you choose to do the hard things. God wants to teach us to serve but our heart posture must be right. We can elevate our roles by taking responsibility, not so we can think more highly of ourselves, but so we can serve others. God used David’s faithfulness to bring him to greatness. The thing that positions us most powerfully, is our commitment to faithfulness. Pastor Erwin asked Kelly about her journey with her career and family, and how race and faith have impacted her story. Kelly empowered us to live a generous life and expect to see how God moves through our generosity. When they covered Kelly’s career, she emphasized the importance of truly loving your work. Our dreams are meant to bring us enjoyment, even when the journey seems difficult along the way. There is a grit that is required to step into the dreams God has given us, and hard work can take us places that talent never could. Pastor Erwin asked Kelly to share about her passion for giving. She told a story of a time when she felt stuck. Her best friend encouraged her to give and be generous, and to see how God would provide. Kelly made bold decisions after that conversation and decided to be more and more generous. She saw how God showed up for her again and again when she surrendered through generosity. Kelly then shared a moment of feeling fear when she found out she was going to be having a son. But, she was reminded that God would give her what she needed to raise a black man in today’s society. He is joined by Pastor Joe Smith, as well as Jerome and Angela Davis. Tonight Lead Pastor Erwin McManus asks some vulnerable and honest questions about what it is like to live in their shoes. What was first talked about was how each person felt about seeing the video of George Floyd and how he passed. Joe, Jerome and Angela all explain how hard it was to watch the video, but how necessary it was for something like this to be watched and talked about within their own families. “This isn’t the first time we’ve seen the disregard for humanity” Pastor Joe Smith states. Erwin then went on to ask their opinion, “Are things getting better or worse? Have things always been bad and is it becoming relevant now just because we’re getting it on camera?” Each one of them agreed that this problem has been around for generations, and that we have to fight for these moments so there’s no more George Floyd’s in the future. We’re not okay with this. We’re done waiting for things to get better, we have to move as a nation with the mindset of ‘enough is enough’. We will not let this define us moving forward. Will the process be perfect? No, but we know that the present is unacceptable. We have a future where we can all breathe. There are many ways that we as society can come together and help. It all starts local. Call elected officials, doing the tedious work of bringing justice is important. If you have children, break the misconceptions that society puts on us, talk about diversity and normalize it. Use your voice, stand up for righteousness and have those conversations. We as a church need to lead the way, create a space for people who can’t have their voice amplified. Create a space to let them know they matter most. Nevertheless, everyone who’s trusted their life with Jesus has been given special gifts that can speak louder than words right now. The gift to serve. Serving is embedded in all of us thanks to Jesus and how he modeled leadership in His life. Pastor Erwin teaches out of 1 Peter 4:10, which states “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others.” God wants to teach us to serve with our heart postures aligned with His. We can elevate our roles by taking a high level responsibility. We don’t do this so we can think more highly of ourselves, but so we can serve others and elevate them. When we wonder where God is in our hurt and suffering, we find a surprising answer. God doesn’t come to meet us when everything is better or come only when things are right again. God is the greatest servant and shows us that He bends to our level and serves humanity in their time of need. This empowers us to serve one another in the same way. Jesus has already come to serve us, now it’s our turn to serve each other. Now more than ever, it’s important to remember we can stay connected regardless of distance. We can even GROW in connection more than before-but it does take courage. As it can be easy to overlooked how interconnected we all really are, Pastor Erwin helps us remember this reality. Based on a passage in Galatians 3:28, he explains that God is trying to reconnect us and remind us there is power in oneness. There is power when we unite. God doesn’t want us to be separated and alone. God’s desire for us is that we realize that we’re never really alone. Why does it take so long for our souls to realize they need God? Often times we forget we are actually a part of the human story and a part of God’s story. We forget that our choices have an impact on the human story. We must remember we’ve been given everything needed to not only survive but thrive together here on earth.
